Santa Fe, the oldest town inhabited by Whites in America, was originally an Indian Pueblo called "Tiguex." Its earliest historical mention was 1605 when it became the capital of the province which indicates that it was already a Spanish town. Undoubtedly the first settlement was in the 16th century by Spanish adventurers. The erection of this house, so tradition relates, was by the Pueblo Indians and that it was part of the ancient Pueblo of Tiguex.
