Cheapside, Chepe of the Middle Ages, and one of the most ancient and historic streets in London - extends from St. Paul's to the Mansion House, and has always been a street of traders. John Gilpin, of ballad fame, was a "linendraper born of Cheapside. Here stood one of the Eleanor Crosses, which the Puritans pulled down in 1643.
